More and more these days, professional athletes themselves are trying to become their own brands. Sure, plenty of your favorite pro athletes are paid to hawk a product like Nike, Adidas or Under Armour, but, by extension, each athlete has his or her own persona that ties everything together.

Michael Jordan, for example, is known for many things. From his trademark tongue wag to “the shrug” to the Jordan Brand logo itself, we associate many different things with His Airness. We know Tiger Woods for his furious fist pumps. We associate Serena Williams with her emotional and physical dominance over her opponents.

For some athletes, hair has nothing to do with their public persona. LeBron James, Clayton Kershaw and Peyton Manning carved out Hall of Fame-caliber careers for themselves while sporting little more than generic hairstyles. For others, though, hair is a huge part of what makes them who they are.

Let’s take a look at some of the more noteworthy hairstyles from the world of sports today.

Odell Beckham Jr, New York Giants

The case can be made that Odell Beckham Jr. is the most well-known player in the NFL this side of Tom Brady. Part of that has to do with the fact that he plies his craft in the media mecca known as New York City, but he burst onto the scene in 2014 and immediately started putting up massive numbers.

Beckham caught at least 91 passes for at least 1,300 yards in each of his first 3 NFL seasons before suffering through an injury-plagued fourth campaign. He’s arguably the most popular athlete in New York these days, due in no small part to his blonde locks.

Beckham is an eccentric personality, which plays into his mystique. He’s always been thought of as a bit of an oddball, and he hasn’t been afraid to try new things when it comes to his hair. His hair has even led to an endorsement deal with Head & Shoulders. If Head & Shoulders wants you in their ads, you know you’re doing something right with the lettuce.

It’ll be interesting to see if Odell sticks with the blonde for the duration of his career, or if he decides to switch it up before too long.

Elfrid Payton, Phoenix Suns

Elfrid Payton’s hair almost defies description. Just look at it. It’s really amazing.

Obviously, Gurriel does something to make the hair do that. It wouldn’t just stand straight up on its own without some sort of help. Surely there is some kind of spray or cream in play here. Regardless, his hair is still absolutely spectacular.

Perhaps even more impressive is that his hair still stands up like that even after wearing a baseball cap or a batting helmet for extended periods of time. That spray must be top-of-the-line. As a result, Gurriel looks like a human pineapple.

Arturo Vidal, Bayern Munich

Without question, the world of soccer gives us our most vast array of hairstyles. Some players opt for the classic cropped look, while others are more willing to just let it fly. Arturo Vidal is somewhere in the middle. The Chilean international has just about the most intricate haircut you’ll ever see.
