We mostly watch the soccer World Cup because of the passion and quality of the players. The strongest nations competing for the most prestigious trophy is the ultimate entertainment for the spectators.
Still, the competition is not always that serious and dignified. Even the best players and coaches in the world are still human. They make all kinds of mistakes and embarrass themselves every now and then.
This funny side of soccer can be very entertaining at times. Of course, the World Cup in Russia was no exception. There were some hilarious moments during it, and I’ve highlighted my favorite ones below.
With memories of the tournament starting to fade, let’s take a look at these funny moments and laugh together.
Brazil was far from convincing during the World Cup start, and Neymar mostly made the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
His performance on the pitch was not good enough. The Brazilian fans and the media believe he’s too selfish, and they might have a solid point.
On top of that, his hair became an instant meme. A lot of people use the term “spaghetti style,” which tells you the whole story.
Even the French legend Eric Cantona couldn’t resist and trolled the Brazilian.
The Brazilian obviously took the hints and was sporting a different haircut by the knockout stages.
Is there a worse time to show some swag and try an acrobatic throw-in than the 93rd minute of a game your team is losing? Milad Mohammadi picked a terrible moment to showboat, and it backfired horribly.
Just watch him kiss the ball and then gloriously fail.
I think this is the one that got me laughing the most! Poor guy will be part of the World Cup bloopers videos and compilations for forever now.
During the tournament, I discussed how VAR is affecting the World Cup. I forgot to mention one thing, though. It almost took the life of a member of the Iranian staff.
The guy was extremely happy when the team found the net against Spain, but VAR determined that the goal shouldn’t stand.
As a result, he had some health issues and had to go to the hospital.
Fortunately, it’s all well, and he ended up back with the squad. There were plenty more VAR incidents subsequently, but thankfully none came with such dramatic consequences.
Denmark managed to qualify for the last 16 and had a shot against Croatia. It was a close game that ended on penalties.
The Danish could’ve probably done better if their plan wasn’t to basically rely only on Eriksen to create something up front. I think this funny t-shirt is a great example of how everyone knows what to expect from Denmark.
Maybe they’ll have better luck next time with slightly more adventurous tactics.
Michy Batshuayi was extremely happy that Belgium managed to score against England. He was ready to celebrate the goal a bit too enthusiastically, though. He’s earned a place in the fail compilation for every World Cup from now on.
It is my favorite funny moment of the World Cup so far. Enjoy!
What makes it even better is the way Batshuayi reacted later on. It’s always nice to see a soccer player that doesn’t take himself too seriously and is ready to laugh.
Diego Maradona should probably concentrate on watching games and stop embarrassing himself. The guy is one of the best players in soccer history, but he hit rock bottom during the Russian World Cup.
It was all fun and games at the beginning of the match between Argentina and Nigeria. He was dancing with some random fans and enjoying himself.
However, it got ugly fast, and Maradona was shown sleeping and then giving the finger to someone at the stadium. He looked drunk and confused, so perhaps this wasn’t a funny moment at all on reflection. His earlier antics were amusing, though, so I’m going to leave this one on my list.
The South Americans have always had a reputation of going down a bit easy. Some of the most technically gifted players in the history of soccer have come from this continent, but also some of the most disgraceful divers, too.
Neymar didn’t have the best World Cup, as mentioned earlier, but there’s no doubting his talent. Some of his antics during the soccer World Cup were pathetic at times, however.
To be fair, the Brazilian forward is on the receiving end of many fouls, but he often overreacts or sometimes simply dives with no contact whatsoever. It’s a part of the game no one likes. The good news is that a lot of people are vocal about.
This video shows a bunch of kids and their coach mocking Neymar. It’s trolling at its finest, and let’s hope it makes the divers think a bit.
The brave Japan team almost caused one of the biggest upsets in the soccer World Cup. The Asian side was 2-0 up against a much stronger Belgian side in the second half.
Unfortunately, the individual attacking quality of the Europeans was too much, and they managed to win the game 3-2 at the end. It was a great soccer match, and Japan was surely extremely disappointed.
Under such circumstances, many countries would be mad, and we’ve seen many sports team trash the locker room or at least leave a mess behind out of disappointment. Not Japan! The guys actually cleaned the locker room and left a thank-you note in Russian.
This is on top of the fact that their fans are known for cleaning the stadium after each game, and this is not the first World Cup when it’s happened. Honestly, I sometimes dream of a world where everyone is Japanese. I think it would be an awesome place to live.
Way to go, Japan!
The English side was so determined to win this soccer World Cup that even the manager Gareth Southgate was training hard! Actually, he went a bit too far and dislocated his shoulder.
To be fair, it’s not that cool to mock injuries, but the English manager was able to see the funny side of the situation himself.
Probably this is the spirit that made England so relaxed during their stay in Russia. I’ve never seen the squad in a better mood during a big soccer tournament.
At the start of the soccer World Cup, there were some bug issues in some of the England games. The problem was still there in the quarterfinals. The French goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, almost swallowed a dragonfly in the game against Uruguay.
I’m sure there are a few of countries around the globe where this is considered a delicacy, but France is not one of them.

The Croatian national side was ecstatic when Mario Mandzukic scored in the extra time against England to send them through to the final. The players went nuts, and there’s one man who can testify that’s the case.
A photographer near the touchline was brought down by the delirious Croatian team. Instead of complaining, he stayed professional and captured the moment with his camera. As a result, you will see some of the most emotional close-ups of the Croatian joy.
Honestly, I think this should become a thing in soccer photography from now on! It’s one of the most exciting sets of pictures I’ve ever seen. I hope the guy is okay, though. It’s not that easy to get smashed by a bunch of wild Croatians. Just ask England!
