Betting Preview of the 2018 Wyndham Championship

There’s only one week left on the PGA Tour schedule before the FedEx Cup Playoffs get underway. I can’t promise you that the Wyndham Championship will provide as much excitement as we saw this past Sunday at the PGA, but here’s what I can assure you.

The opportunities to make some money betting golf are every bit as present this week as they were last week.

We don’t have the big names like Tiger Woods and Brooks Koepka teeing it up at Sedgefield Country Club, and I get that. But that doesn’t mean we need to just sit around and wait until the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin to get back into the golf-betting mode.

Do you not feel like doing any research? Too tired to dig through the top online betting sites?

Don’t worry; you don’t have to. I enjoy putting the work in and unlocking the value each and every week on the PGA Tour. Just follow along and see if you can get on board with any of the wagers that are catching my eye.

C.T. Pan (-110) vs. Chesson Hadley (-110)

Too many signs are pointing towards C.T. Pan in his matchup versus Chesson Hadley this week. Chesson hits the ball a long way and is a very streaky player. However, his distance advantage will be somewhat negated at Sedgefield CC. Many holes dogleg sharply, forcing players to hit something less than 280 yards off the tee.

On top of that, Hadley has hit a bump in the road, missing the cut at both the British Open and the PGA Championship. His last start before that was an abysmal T-72nd at the John Deere Classic.

Flip the coin, and you’ll see that C.T. Pan is oozing to play well at the Donald Ross setup in North Carolina starting on Thursday. The fact that he’s way back at 135th in driving distance won’t hinder him from making a plethora of birdies this week.

Remember, folks, that Henrik Stenson won this tournament last year at 22 under par, and he didn’t even carry a driver in his bag the entire week!

Pan can ride his stellar wedge play to a flurry of low scores, and his recent play suggests he is on the verge of doing something special. He’s made 9 of his last 10 cuts, including four straight.

After finishing 17th-39th-34th during a stretch of three July tournaments, the former Washington Huskies golfer placed 11th his last time out at the Barracuda Championship (Aug 5th).

I’m not going to overthink this one. I’ll trust that the course setup combined with recent form will carry me (and C.T Pan!) through to the finish line.

PICKC.T. Pan-110
Shane Lowry (+120) vs. Rafa Cabrera-Bello (-140)

This price is just absurd, ladies and gentlemen. This is a typical overreaction from Cabrera-Bello shooting 64 on Sunday at Bellerive (which vaulted him into a tie for 10th place).

I’m not here to debate who is playing better golf at the moment, because Shane and Rafa are both playing well. I also know that both of these men will be trying to impress Thomas Bjorn in hopes of making a late push towards making the Ryder Cup team.

So I see good form on both sides and plenty of motivation.

But there is no reason whatsoever that this should be anything other than an evenly-priced head-to-head matchup. I haven’t seen this big of a discount since I was at Target the day after Thanksgiving!

Is this Black Friday all over again, or are the bookies just dropping the ball?

Since splitting with his caddie and appointing his brother on the bag, Shane Lowry has reeled off three straight top-15 finishes, including a 12th last week at the PGA Championship.

If you are looking for a hot putter, I’ll tell you that Shane led the field in strokes gained putting last week in St. Louis.

I’ll also tell you that Lowry fired 67-64-67-67 here last year en route to a 7th-place finish, so there is really nothing to worry about with the 31-year-old Irishman heading into the week.

Anytime I see a guy who should be in the -110 to -115 range hanging around at +120, I know what to do. I think you do as well, so head to BetOnline and book this one with the utmost confidence that you are getting an abundance of value.

PICKShane Lowry+120
Julian Suri (+105) vs. Steve Stricker (-125)

Listen, I love Steve Stricker’s golf game and think that Sedgefield is the type of layout that Steve can excel at. But I am not going to ignore the way that Julian Suri has been playing as of late, and more importantly, how well Julian’s game travels.

If you don’t know who Julian Suri is, allow me to quickly fill you in.

The 27-year-old from New York City has finally hit his stride as a professional since his All-American days at Duke University. He finished 28th at Carnoustie and 19th at Bellerive, so I know this kid can play when “the gun goes off.”

Solid iron play is what will set up birdie looks at the Wyndham Championship, making me love the fact that Julian was third in the field in strokes gained on approach shots last week at the PGA.

His game is trending in the right direction, and his relative anonymity amongst average golf fans is the only reason he’s the underdog in a matchup versus Stricker. Go to BetOnline now and grab Suri at +105 in this head-to-head before the sharps realize this value and end up altering the line.

PICKJulian Suri+105
Sergio Garcia to Finish Top-20 (+130)

Sergio Garcia is in the midst of playing some of the most inconsistent golf of his entire career, and it’s been disappointing to see for someone who has always rooted for “El Niño.”

He is on the verge of missing the FedEx Cup Playoffs for the first time in his career, as well as possibly being left off the European Ryder Cup team. Those two things could become a reality if he doesn’t show some serious signs of life this week at Sedgefield Country Club.

He hasn’t been here since 2013 but needed to add this tournament in hopes of picking up some much-needed FedEx Cup points. The good news is that he won at this venue in 2012, although he played “so-so” in his title defense in 2013 while finishing 29th.

Despite his recent downswing, there isn’t a European golfer that wants to be on the Ryder Cup team more than Sergio Garcia. The 2017 Masters champ knows that getting into contention in Greensboro is a great way to show Captain Bjorn that his game is turning in the right direction.

There’s no sugar-coating it here. Garcia’s back is against the wall, and he MUST pull it together this week and play well.

I’ve never seen Sergio +130 to land inside the top 20 in this weak of a field, but it’s some other value I found that has me salivating about this price.

Sergio’s only matchup on the main sites this week is against Ollie Schniederjans, where Sergio is listed between -125 and -145. However, both golfers have the identical +130 number to finish in the top 20.

This has me thinking the +130 price for Sergio is not only fair, but we are also getting a bargain. Try and forget about how poorly Sergio has played this season and remember that he is still a world-class player. He could turn things around at the drop of a hat, and for his sake, it needs to happen this week.

It will take right around a top-20 finish to advance to the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and I’ll put my faith in Sergio that he can get it done.

Final Thoughts

Don’t just be content that the major championship season is over and the FedEx Cup Playoffs are starting up next week.

Do that, and you completely miss out on all the value that’s available at the online sportsbooks this week. I mean, you don’t have to place any wagers on the Wyndham Championship. You don’t have to try and pad your wallet this weekend if you don’t feel like it.

But at least answer this.

Do you want to bet on a player at +120 in a head-to-head when he should clearly be -110?

If you answered no, then pass over this page and keep looking for ways to make some extra cash over the weekend. However, if you are ready to latch onto the value and put yourself in a position to turn a profit, place these wagers, and the one on Lowry specifically.

I’ll be back next week giving out tips and advice for The Northern Trust.

But until then, good luck!
